Coach Bob Long Says:
The Chillicothe Hornets boys' tennis team (1-3) played
another close match, hosting the Benton Cardinals Monday at
Daryl Danner Park. The Hornets lost 4-5 for the second time
this season. Tyler Maasdam teamed up with fellow junior Seth
Bayte to win a tight doubles match in a tie-breaker. After
falling behind early Senior Gunnar Young and Junior Matt
Callen won 8-6 giving Chillicothe the 2-1 lead heading into
singles.
Tyler Maasdam played his best match of the season
against arguably the best player in the conference Bostyn
Horn. Despite the 2-8 result, Tyler had several deuce games
and was able to go shot-for-shot against the talented
Cardinal.
Gunnar Young as he did in doubles got off to a slow
start, then won the final six games. Seth Bayte made his
varsity dual debut in victorious fashion. Winning the doubles
dramatically, Seth took care of business in singles by taking
a 7-0 lead, eventually winning 8-2. The Hornets had their best
performance of the season in defeat.
All of the players battled throughout. Matt Callen,
after beginning 0-6 in singles, won five of the last seven
games. The Hornets travel to St Joseph Wednesday to face the
LeBlond Golden Eagles.
