Coach Bob Long Says:
The Chillicothe Hornets Boys' tennis team (5-9)
finished fifth (consolation champions) in the eight team
Benton Tournament at Noyes Courts in St Joseph. The Hornets
were without their number one player Tyler Maasdam
(out-of-state graduation) for the second day in a row. The
Hornets lost to the number three seed, Savannah, 1-4. Junior
Tyler Black and freshman Carson Anderson were able to squeak
out a win at the number three doubles. Within the eight person
team event are individual competitions. Tyler and Carson
finished third overall in the number three doubles position,
going 3-0 on the day. Tyler has had a terrific season at the
number one junior varsity position and this was Carson's first
varsity competition (Carson is Hornet #12) (Montoya and
Montgomery are #7 and #8 for Savannah).
In the consolation semi-final, Chillicothe defeated
Cameron 5-0. Junior Matt Callen and sophomore Noah Crowe won
easily and senior Gunnar Young and sophomore Grahm Mayers won
in a tie-breaker. Junior Seth Batye (Chillicothe #7) defeated
Tyler Anderson (Cameron's #2). Seth placed third in the number
one singles competition. Junior Colten Johnson (Chillicothe
#10) defeated Levi Chastain (Cameron #4). Colten also placed
third in his division-singles number two. Tyler Black and
Carson Anderson completed the sweep winning 10-5.
In the consolation final, the Hornets defeated Benton a
team they had lost a close 4-5 match to earlier this season.
After losing the number one and two doubles, the Hornets hopes
fell on the number three doubles along with both singles
players. Tyler and Carson beat Benton's number eight and ten.
Seth defeated Benton's number six player for the second time
this season. The decisive match fell on junior Colten Johnson
who won his first varsity match last week in the MEC
tournament. Colten jumped out to an early 3-0 lead and held on
for a comfortable 10-3 win against Benton's number nine
player.
The Hornets have had a deep team all season and this
tournament show cased the middle of the line up. #6 Seth, #10
Colten and #7 Tyler/#12 Carson were 7-2 on the day. Maryville
clinched the conference championship Thursday and won the
Benton tournament on Friday. The Hornets begin district
competition against the Excelsior Spring Tigers on Monday, May
7 in Excelsior Springs.
