Coach Bob Long Says:
The Chillicothe Hornets Boys' tennis team (6-9) seeded
fifth, defeated the fourth seeded Excelsior Springs Tigers in
the first round of district competition. The Hornets won two
out of three of the doubles matches, setting up the victory if
they could split the singles. Junior Seth Batye continued his
good play with an easy 6-1, 6-0 win. Sophomore Noah Crowe and
junior Matt Callen played hard, but couldn't win a set in
their singles matches. Junior Tyler Maasdam was able to
frustrate the number one Tiger, Seth Forstner. Forstner had
beaten Maasdam 8-1 earlier this season. After going down 2-4
in the second set, the talented Forstner forfeited the final
two games. The win gave Chillicothe the 4-3 lead and in need
of one more win to continue their teams season Tuesday in
Trenton. Junior Grahm Mayers lost a back and forth match
against his injured opponent senior Austin Clawson. In the
mean time senior Hornet Gunnar Young had taken his second set
to a tie-breaker. Despite losing the tie-breaker, Gunnar ran
out to an early lead in the third set, eventually winning 6-2.
The Hornets play Trenton in the district semi-final on Tuesday
and compete in individual district play on Saturday, May 12 in
Excelsior Springs.
