The Chillicothe Hornets
scored the first 12 points in the game but Maryville scored the
final 20 and went on to win the District championship game 20-12 at
Chillicothe.
After stopping Maryville's first drive, Chillicothe
used the rushing attack to march 68 yards on their first possession
to score. The Jack Willard extra point was blocked by Maryville.
The Spoofhounds on their next play threw an
interception to Konner Sewell who returned it to the 21 yard line.
Three plays later Chillicothe scored but the two point conversion
was stopped.
In the final
three quarters Chillicothe was their own worst enemy with an
abundance of ill-timed penalties, and problems putting together an
effective offense with back to back 3 plays and punt drives,
followed by a fumble on the first play of the drive and a missed
field goal, while Maryville had big plays including a 53 yard end
around touchdown run and a 22 yard touchdown catch by Brady Atwell.
The Hornets had chances in the 4th quarter but a
9 yard sack stopped one drive, an incomplete pass stopped a drive,
two incomplete passes stopped a drive, a fumble on the first play of
a drive was recovered by Atwell and a bad punt snap by Maryville
that led to a penalty for two forward passes on the same play gave
the Hornets the ball in the Maryville 38. The Hornets drove to a
first and goal on the 8 but had a 5 yard penalty, a run for no yards
and two incomplete passes followed by a missed 30 yard field goal
with 6:32 left in the game.
