Through the history of Hornets Football, there are occasional
games that will forever be etched in players, coaches and fans
minds. Games like Chillicothe's playoff win over Platte County
in 2003 and the Hornets MEC win at home over Maryville in
2017.
On Friday night, September 23 2022 the latest
chapter in the Book of Hornet Pride was written by the 2022
Hornets team when they walked into St Pius X stadium and
methodically took down the #2 ranked, unbeaten St Pius X
Warriors.
It started with the first play of the game and
ended with a spectacular defensive play. Chillicothe's Javon
Kille fielded the opening kick off at the 10 yard line and
behind spectacular blocking took it to the house for his
second kick off return for touchdown this season.
In a back and forth battle, the Hornets defense
twice stepped up in the second quarter, holding St Pius to two
field goals instead of touchdowns. It would come back to haunt
the Warriors.
The Field Goals gave Pius a 20-14 lead at the
half. The Hornets responded in the second half with a Griff
Bonderer 1 yard run followed by an impromptu 2-point
conversion for a 22-20 Hornets lead.
Pius drove down field in the 4th but again the
Hornets defense responded with a Max Wagers Goal Line
interception. The Hornets ultimately found the end zone on a
Silas Midgyett run to take a 29-20 lead.
Pius was undeterred, driving the football down
field, but a pass into the end zone was intercepted by Griff
Bonderer for the Hornets win.
