. The Lady
Hornets Softball team edged out Benton in St Joseph 6 to 5 in
a battle of state ranked teams in a battle of two quality
pitchers. Chillicothe's Kinlei Boley threw 120 pitches with 78
strikes while Hurst of Benton threw 106 pitches with 72
strikes.
Chillicothe took the lead early when Kerstin Dunn sent
a fly ball into left field for a game lead off home run. In
the top of the fourth inning Jolie Bonderer had a lead off
double to center field. After a ground out, Adra Stretch
singled to right field to score Bonderer. Later in the inning
Katelyn Fleener reached on an error and then Torie Stoner
singled to center field to score two, A double by the next
batter Kerstin Dunn scored one for a 4-0 Lady Hornets lead.
Benton, however, was far from rolling over. Two errors,
a single and a home run gave them 4 runs in the bottom of the
fourth inning to tie the game.
After a scoreless fifth, Chillicothe started the sixth
inning with back to back outs, then Tori Stoner reached on an
error, Dunn on a single and Hope Helton doubled to bring home
both runners for a 6-4 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth Benton's lead
off hitter Hurst sent one over the left field fence on a 3-1
count to close the game to just a one run difference. They
threatened later in the sixth with two out when they picked up
back to back singles, but Boley struck out the next batter to
get out of the inning.
Benton had another chance in the bottom of the seventh
with two out. They picked up a walk on 5 pitches and Hurst
singled but Duncan struck out swinging to give the #3
ranked Lady Hornets the win over #8 ranked Benton |
