Story by Coach Grable
Another beautiful night in Chillicothe at Jerry Litton Memorial
Stadium where the Chillicothe Lady Hornets took on non-conference
foe Mid-Buchanan Lady Dragons. The Lady Dragons came into the
contest ranked 10th in the Missouri Class 1 rankings.
The game would start out back and forth as both teams
positioned themselves to try and mount attacks. Mid-Buchanan would
have the better of play early as the Lady Hornet defense would hold
strong and limit quality opportunities. Layla McKinnis worked the
goal for the Lady Hornets and kept everything in front of her. The
defense of Chillicothe consisting of Bynley Beemer, Anya Moore,
Emerson Stefancik, Amyah McKinnis and Ashlynn Daugherty continued to
stall any attack by the Lady Dragons. The Chillicothe attack would
mount a few efforts late in the first half and create some quality
chances, but couldn’t put anything in the net. The halftime score
was knotted – 0-0. That would be the theme through the night.
The second half was much like the first half –
both squads making runs and attacking but not able to put anything
between the pipes and the match was tied after regulation 0-0.
The first overtime, much like the first and second halves of
regulation would remain at 0-0.
The second overtime, are you starting to get the theme, would remain
0-0 as both tired squads mounted solid efforts but couldn’t find the
finishing touch. So the match remained tied 0-0 and we headed to
penalty kicks.
NFHS Rules indicate each team provide it’s first 5
shooters. Each team gets opportunities and the best of 5 will win
the shootout. However, as you probably guessed, we were still tied
after the first 5 shooters for each team were completed. Each squad
was able to make 3 of the 5 shots and we headed to sudden death
penalty kicks. Which means, each team has a shooter and it’s 1 to 1
at that point. If both make, we keep going. If both miss, we keep
going. If one makes and one misses, we are over. The Lady Dragons
went first and Layla McKinnis made the save. Anya Moore stepped up
as the 6th shooter for Chillicothe and buried a shot in the right
side of the net to win the match for the Lady Hornets 4-3 on
penalties. |
