More about Earl Steele of Chillicothe: He was apparently the only medal winner for Chillicothe in the Columbia meet, which was an early version of a State Championship type meet. Encouraged by his time, Steele traveled to a meet at Washington University at St Louis, apparently the only Chillicothe athlete invited.  Steele entered Class B - the smaller of the two classes, and won the Mile race in 4:48, considered a state record by 3 seconds, winning by over 60 yards over the second place runner. It was also 5 seconds faster than the winning time in the Large School class.
Steele's time was so impressive, he was invited by Coach Stagg of Chicago University to run in their meet in Illinois. No information regarding his attendance at that meet was found.
