Chillicothe battled
back from fumbles on their first two possessions to down Marshall
24-7 at Jerry Litton Memorial Stadium. The Hornets fumbled on the
2nd play of the game, then after holding Marshall to 3 plays and
punt, fumbled again on the second play of their next possession.
Despite being given the ball on the Chillicothe 34 and the
Chillicothe 47, Marshall failed to pick up a first down in either
possession.
Chillicothe put together a 17 point second quarter when they
scored on all three drives. Blake Brose recovered a Marshall fumble
on the first play of the second quarter to set up the first of two
Brett Stephens 6 yard touchdowns. The Hornets Connor Lindley kicked
a 26 yard field goal to round out the scoring in the first half.
Marshall managed just 17 yards in the first half before ending the
half with two carries for 31 yards.
The Owls started the second half with an eight minute thirty
second drive capped by a Matt Jacobs three yard run. Chillicothe
answered with their own 11 play drive that ended with a Jared
McCauslin to Bryce Young 15 yard touchdown early in the fourth
quarter. After holding Marshall, Chillicothe ran out the clock for
the win.
Fullback Brett Stephens led Chillicothe with 11 carries for 95
yards and two touchdowns. Bryce Young had 14 carries for 80 yards
and caught 3 passes for 49 yards.
Marshall played with out two-way linemen starters Senior Andrew
Crumm (6'4" 310lbs) and Senior Nathan Cato (6'5" 270lbs).

Boys Soccer
<schedule>
The Chillicothe Boys Soccer team will turn to some underclassmen to
help out a soccer program with high hopes. The Hornets finished 7-10
overall but 4-3 in the M.E.C. in just their second season, but gone
are several key seniors including leading scorer Jacob Rockhold (26
goals, 8 assists) and
all district Goalkeeper Caleb Buckmaster.
Coach Bill Allison has 23 players still out for
soccer, after losing one potential starter when Clark Allen
re-injured a knee in the first week of practice and is out for the
season. The Hornets will look to Colton Whiteside for offensive
punch and fill the void left by Rockhold’s graduation. Allison also
pointed to Laine Saunders as showing great improvement in just his
second year of playing soccer. Defender Chris Kleinschmidt,
Sophomore Midfielder and Forward Connor Runoff and Freshman Grant
Peterson also drew praise from the coach. Three players are battling
to try and fill the Goalkeeper position vacated by the graduation of
Buckmaster.
If there is one area of disappointment, Coach
Allison says its in the lack of off-season work by returning
players, stating attendance at summer camp was well below
expectations. “We’re seeing where they slacked off a little bit in
the preseason, especially in their conditioning” stated Allison, who
was pleased to see good camp attendance by the Freshman players.
As for the Midland Empire Conference, the Hornets
Head Coach says once again, Smithville is the team to beat with
their ability to play soccer almost year around. He also stated
Maryville always has good players and said Savannah could be “a
sneaker.”
Cross Country
<schedule>
2008 saw Chillicothe bring home it’s first every Boys Cross Country
Conference Championship. If they want to defend that title, some
young runners will need to step up to fill the shoes left by nine
departed Seniors, including most of the 2008 varsity boys squad.
Coach Tim Riekena has nine boy runners and one girl runner out
this season, with Daniel Riekena the team's lone senior. Coach Riekena
hopes success will breed success, stating preseason times are
already just as impressive as last year’s veteran squad. “We just
need some endurance and experience” stated Riekena, who hopes to have a cluster of runners
that will give the team good points each meet.
On the girl’s side, Junior Mary Kate Taylor returns as a one
person girl’s team. Taylor has already qualified for state
competition twice, finishing 36th at last year’s state
meet. “She’s just a great example of someone who works hard”
explained Coach Riekena. “She already came into the preseason with
500 miles this summer”. Taylor isn’t the only hard worker on the
team. Five runners came into the preseason with 300
miles in 100 days and two were in the 500 mile club.
Chillicothe opens the season a week early with a meet at
Maryville on August 31st then hosts the Chillicothe
Invitational on September 8th. Riekena is hoping for a
large crowd to watch this year’s only home Cross Country meet.

For the
second time in as many games, the Lady Hornets had to rely on a
rally late in the game to pick up the win. Chillicothe's Sarah
Baldwin drove in two runs in the bottom of the seventh to give
Chillicothe a 2-1 win over Lawson.
Chillicothe Coach Stan Baldwin called the game another
thriller with good defense and good pitching, however Chillicothe
left 9 on base. Chillicothe is now 2-0 on the season

Girls
Volleyball
<schedule>
The
Chillicothe Volleyball teams looks for improvement, following last
year’s rebuilding record of 7-16-3. Coach Karen Jackson has 26
players to work with including five girls who saw quality playing
time on the varsity level in 2008.
Returning impact players include last year’s starting Setter,
Junior Bradee Gabel, Hitters Ashley Myers (Jr) Devan Crowe (Sr) and
Katie Jo Ross (Jr). Williams also returns one back row player in
Senior Shannon Baker. With that amount of returning experience,
Coach Williams expects improvement in several areas.
“Hopefully we will be able to block a little better and put
some balls down a little better” stated Williams. She also is
stressing better communication between her players on the floor.
If there is one downside to the Chillicothe Volleyball program,
it’s geography. Williams admits that not being able to play club
volleyball year around puts the Lady Hornets at a disadvantage.
In the Midland Empire Conference race, Williams says several
teams will be battling for the title including last year’s champion
St Joseph LeBlond along with strong competition from Smithville,
Savannah and St Joseph Benton.
Chillicothe opens the season September 8th at home
against Savannah, one of three straight home matches.
